Wireless Standards

The following standards are the most popular in the UK:

IEEE 802.11b Speed 11Mbps.

IEEE 802.11g Speed 54Mbps.

In addition there are a number of proprietary standards with speeds above 54Mbps, such as 802.11g+ Speed 108/125Mbps and over.

• A "b" Client can connect to "g" and "g+" Access Points <o:p></o:p>
• A "g" Client can connect to "b" and "g+" Access Points <o:p></o:p>
• A "g+" Client can connect to "b" and "g" Access Points<o:p></o:p>

However, the speed will always be that of the lowest standard involved. Generally it is recommended always to use the same standard for both Clients and Access Points.

Range

Note that it is difficult to define an exact range for any Wireless network, as it depends on a number of factors, such as whether the wireless signal has to travel through a number of walls or stories in a building.  The density of the material used in the walls and ceilings is the most dominant factor.
